Cool Spring Cemetery
Directions - This cemetery is just a few miles west of Laneville. From Henderson, take US 79S (southwest) to FM 1798, turn left (south). Go passed FM 839 and CR 4198 then watch for the green county cemetery sign on the left. Turn right onto County Road 4181D. The road makes a hard curve to the right then meanders past some houses and fades into the pastures. Follow the track, keeping to the right. The cemetery is actually in a pasture and you should get permission to visit BEFORE you go out there. There are many unmarked graves and graves marked with field stones. The cemetery was damaged by a tornado several years ago and cattle have roamed through it since the fence came down.
The unmarked graves of which I am aware are Dora Agnes Turner Reed and probably William Jay. Stones that are now missing belonged to Mackey F Cochran, Jettye Hortense Irwin, and Hugh W McKnight.
From Joel Atcheson:
I am researching the Atchison/Atcheson family that originated (at least as far back
as can be found) in Edgefield County, S.C. S.J. (Samuel Jackson Atchison) came from S.C.
to Bibb/Chilton Co, AL when he was about 10 yrs old, with his father James Atchison b. 1770
and the rest of the family. He moved from Bibb Co. AL in Oct. 1866, to Rusk Co., TX, under
very unusual circumstances, relating to the Civil War.
He and his entire family (about 12 to 15 members) arrived there in
late Nov. 1866. His entire family are buried in the New Salem Cemetery, near there. For
some reason, Mary (Crumpton) Atcheson, his wife was not buried with him, even though his
[tombstone] says "with Mary".
He left Alabama because he believed that there were bands of
outlaws (Blackwell's Raiders was one) at the end of the Civil War, who were after him and
wanted to kill him. I actually have photo copies of Bibb Co Probate Court Records of 1866,
that state this as fact. It's very curious to me that 1 year to the month after leaving
AL, he dies as a relatively young man, compared to the rest of his family.
I am one of many gg-grandson's of his older brother, Yancy D.
Atchison. S.J. has literally hundreds of descendants (another long story, he has one son
killed in the war, who left a wife and 3 kids here, who did not go to TX) that still live
here. (See more at New Salem Cemetery.)
